SAINT
CHARLES *C. A. R. E. S. PROGRAM
*Children Are Receiving Extended Services
This
service is being provided as a Christian response to a very real
need of some of our parents and guardians. The administration and
faculty have heard parental concerns for an affordable after
school program for school age children in a Christian
environment. Since we now have a separate building to house such
a service, we are able to provide parents with an alternative
program for after school care for their children.
Morning CARES is offered from 7:15 am to 8:00 am each day. These
services are provided in the school cafeteria. Any student
dropped off at school before 8am will be charged the CARES fee.
Afternoon CARES Services are provided in the Kindergarten
Building from 3 PM until 6 PM on regularly scheduled class days
and from 12 Noon to 6 PM on Four-Hour Session Days. Parents may
choose to use this program daily or on specified days.
Registration for each week takes place on Thursday of the week
before services are requested. This procedure is less of a
financial burden on parents. Registration fees are non-refundable
except in the case of an early closing due to an emergency as
explained in this outline. This Extension Program provides
professional care, supervision, recreation, and enrichment
activities. It serves working families and/or parents with
special needs who desire both parochial school education and
supplementary day care in a Catholic environment for children
enrolled in Saint Charles Borromeo School in grades kindergarten
through eighth.
This professionally operated program allows children to
experience a rich diversity of growth activities within a
Catholic environment--activities planned to complement the
philosophy and value system of the school and family. Arts and
crafts projects, games and recreation, naps for younger children,
and snack time are just a few of the growth activities planned.
In addition, there is time set aside for homework completion.
Within a large family environment, this program strives to
provide individual attention, security, consistency, and caring
treatment for children of working parents or parents with special
needs.
The CARES Program is staffed by an experienced director and a
number of devoted and committed teachers/teacher aides. These
professionals, employed on a full-time or part-time basis, work
together to help each child grow in maturity and self-respect as
well as to maintain an atmosphere wherein respect and
understanding for others is realized. All teachers and teacher
aides receive a professional growth evaluation which is reviewed
yearly by the Office of Catholic Education.
Fees are the sole support of the CARES Program . It is not
subsidized by the school or parish.
Important Parental
Responsibilities
Emergencies - Safety
With
the children's safety and well-being in mind, it is MOST
IMPORTANT that each child's parent complete an Emergency Form and
then adhere to the instructions given.
One of the most important regulations concerns the child's
leaving the premises of the CARES Program. Parents or guardians
may not take children from the school yard or other areas without
notifying the CARES Program staff and signing out the child.
CARES Program Staff will not permit children to leave in taxis
presumably sent by parents. If you intend to send a taxi for your
child, you must notify the principal in writing in advance or
have a permanent request on file with the principal.
Parents or guardians may not send persons whose signatures are
not on the Emergency Form to ask for the release of children. For
the child's safety, the release will not be granted.
Another area of concern and also related to the child's safety
and welfare is the matter of telephone messages.
Parents or guardians may wish to telephone the principal asking
that their child be directed to go to various places after
school. As there is always the possibility that a person other
than a parent or guardian may be making this request, such
requests will not be granted.
Expectations
For Children's Behavior
As
members of a caring community, the children will be expected to
respect the staff, each other, and the materials and environment
provided. Children may never leave the building or grounds
without explicit permission of the staff of the CARES Program.
Such permission will only be granted by written order of the
parent or guardian.
In order to maintain a professional atmosphere, we ask that all
staff members be formally addressed as adults--that is,
"Mrs. White, Mr. Jones, or Miss Smith." Informal use of
staff members' first names by students is inappropriate in the
school setting.
Any child who does not conform to the set rules and regulations
of the CARES Program is liable for dismissal from the program.
The child of any parent or guardian who does not honor the rules
and regulations of the CARES Program is liable for dismissal from
the program.
Toys From Home
The
CARES staff discourages toys brought from home because they
cannot be responsible for those lost or broken. In addition,
there is no place to store these toys during the school day while
your child is in class. The CARES Program has a wide assortment
of games, toys, and crafts that are available to all children in
the program.
Snacks
The
CARES staff will provide a beverage and a snack to each child
during his/her stay each day. The cost of beverage and snack is
included in the CARES fee.
Clothing
Children
may bring a change of clothing for participation in the CARES
Program, but the CARES staff cannot be responsible for school
clothing or play clothing. Please instruct you child as to the
care and placement of their clothing so that no items are lost or
misplaced.
Policy : What is An Extension Program?
An
extension program is after school care for regularly enrolled
children in grades kindergarten through eighth. It is staffed by
school personnel, serves only the children enrolled in the
school, and may legally operate only on days when school is in
session either for a full day session or a four-hour day session.
Homework
A
scheduled homework period with a teacher/aide will be provided.
It is the child's responsibility to have his/her assignments and
books. Children may not go back to their classrooms to get these
items. Parents are responsible for checking the child's homework
before the child returns to school on the next school day.
Absences
If
a parent knows in advance that a child will be absent from the
CARES Program on a day when the child is registered to attend or
for any amount of time, the parent must notify the school nurse
when he/she calls in the morning to notify the nurse of the
child's absence.
If a parent takes the child for an early dismissal for any reason
on a day when the child is registered to attend the CARES
Program, he/she must notify the nurse so she in turn will notify
the CARES staff that the child will not be present on that
particular day.
It is most essential that the lines of communication between
parent, school, and CARES staff be kept open for the safety and
welfare of each student enrolled in the CARES Program.
Special Provisions
and Procedures
Illness or Accident
In
cases which appear minor, the teacher will make the student
comfortable until a parent arrives to pick up the child. At this
time the parent will be not)notified of the illness or accident
and the follow-up care given.
In cases which appear serious, the teacher will make an effort to
carry out the instructions as given on the Emergency Form on
file.
Parents who do not wish their child treated in any way should
indicate such on the Emergency Form and should give directions to
be followed in the space marked "Special Instructions."
If the parent does not supply adequate emergency instructions, or
if the instructions given cannot be followed at the time of the
emergency, the CARES staff will act according to their best
judgment for the welfare of the child.
Emergency Closings
Emergency closings due to a
weather emergency or another emergency will be at the discretion
of the principal. Parents will be contacted by telephone. Parents
will be given ample time to pick up their children or to contact
another person listed on the child's Emergency Form to pick up
the child. If the CARES Program is closed for any emergency,
registration fee paid for the unused hour(s) for the CARES
Program on that day will be deducted from the next registration
fee for your child.
FEES AND "PICK-UPS"
Additional
areas of parental responsibilities are in the matters of prompt
fee payment and prompt pick-up of children in the late afternoon.
As previously mentioned, the CARES Program is entirely financed
by a weekly fee charged to participating parents. Prompt payment
on the last school day of the week before the requested service
will assure the continuation of personnel and the provision of
ample supplies, equipment, and snacks.
Payment must accompany the weekly registration form on the last
school day in the week BEFORE you request service for your child.
No child will receive service unless an Emergency Form is on file
with the CARES staff. The CARES fee covers the cost of the
extension program operation. If a parent finds him/herself in an
emergency situation for a particular day, a prepaid request for
service for his/her child will be accepted upon the student's
arrival on the morning of the requested service. Obviously, this
type of request should not be abused. Parents need to plan ahead
for the coming week to see if service is needed for their
children. It is our goal that every parent feels comfortable
knowing that his/her child is in a safe and secure environment
after school hours. Therefore, if a fee prevents you from taking
advantage of this service for your child, please contact the
principal to make other financial arrangements. It is not our
intention to exclude children if there are legitimate f~nancial
concerns for parents.
If a parent or guardian fails to meet the CARES Program fee
payment and does not make adequate arrangements with the
principal, the child will not be permitted to continue in the
program.
Personal checks are acceptable for payment of fee. If the CARES
Program receives more than one Returned Check per family, the
program will not accept payment by check from that family, and
future payments must be made in cash or the child(ren) will not
be permitted to attend the CARES Program. Make all checks or
money orders payable to Saint Charles CAR.E S.. A $20.00 charge
will be assessed for all returned checks.
Staff members are employed ONLY until 6 PM. It is only common
courtesy to respect the time of closure. A substantial fee will
be assessed for late pick-ups if the principal ascertains that a
late pick-up or a history of late pick-ups occurs without
justifiable cause. A telephone call is expected when a parent is
going to be late. Parents will be charged a fee for the next hour
if a child is not picked up at the time designated by the
parents.
Fee must accompany your weekly registration on the last day of
the week before the week of requested service.
