WeatherNet Homeland Security Site
On October 15, 2003, Mrs. Kulbick attended a training workshop and luncheon at the Franklin Institute Science Center to learn more about WeatherNet Classroom and to honor schools who received certification as a WeatherNet Homeland Security Site.
Mrs. Kulbick received a Site Data Collection Packet for the Homeland Security Certification in September. The packet consisted of a series of questions about St. Charles Borromeo's Weather Station and required a series of pictures to be taken from the roof of the station and the surrounding area.
By completing the packet, our school has become a part of the Homeland Security Network, a partnership that allows the National Weather Service to access real time data collected by WeatherNet weather stations in a time of emergency or disaster. This partnership is important because weather has long played a vital role in the government's ability to respond to major disasters, helping them determine which municipalities to evacuate in which order, select the best approach routes for firefighters and policemen, and choose the type of equipment to dispatch to the disaster site.
Mrs. Kulbick was presented with a special flag that will fly under the American Flag each day at St. Charles Borromeo School. She was also given a WeatherNet Star designating the school as a Homeland Security Site.
Thanks to everyone for their help with this project: Mr. Saponaro for initiating the Weather Station Program, the St. Charles Borromeo Barn Crew for installing the Weather Station , the St. Charles Borromeo families who donated funds to purchase the Weather Station and Mrs. Kulbick who maintains the station and is the contact person with AWS.
Thirty-five
schools were presented this special designation.
We are proud of our school!
