“Character Strong . . . PIRATE Proud”

On February 26th, the CMS Unity Club visited the Food Bank of South Jersey for their 6th volunteer shift of the school year. Over 140 club members, along with CMS Staff, worked in the warehouse to sort, pack, and check packages to be sent out for distribution. As part of the CMS “Soup-er Supper for Seniors” event last month, the guests were asked to bring canned food items as admission to the event. After the dinner was over, the guests were able to purchase the leftover soup. As a result of the sale, the club was able to collect $102 profit to donate to the Food Bank. While visiting, the students also brought the canned goods from the dinner, along with the remaining cereal from the “Cereal for Pajamas” campaign.
What can One Do?
The first grade students our New Albany School discussed the difference between wants and needs and embarked on a plan to show the power of teamwork. In support of “National Canned Food Month” they participated in a service project where students examined the answer to the question above.

In connection to the lesson about Uncle Willie and the Soup Kitchen, each child was asked to bring in ONE canned food item by February 22nd. Prior to our volunteer shift, the club met with New Albany students and picked up their donations. These donations, along with our donations delivered during our other visits, are just a portion of the year long effort to help the Food Bank of SJ and our neighboring communities. It is heartwarming to know our efforts have trickled down to our elementary school where the first grade students spearheaded this can collection. A special thank you to Mrs. Coller and New Albany’s First Grade team for joining us on this journey and to everyone who has been part of the process along the way.
